In my walk with God, I have come to realize that spiritual growth is very intentional. It is not something that suddenly just happens. It is a process, an intentional one. You have to know what you want and actively go for it.
That you desire to grow spiritually would not have any effect if your actions do not reflect your desire.
The basic element for spiritual growth is the Word.
The Word of God has all we need to be nurtured and grow in Him. The truth is that there are many who desire to read the word daily but somehow find out every twenty-four-hour goes by without them reading it, well maybe asides Sundays when they go to church. I relate with this struggle and understand how frustrating it can be.
We might be able to make up several excuses like, “I was really busy today,” I lost track of time,” “an emergency came up” etc. I have learned by experience that we will always be able to come up with reasons why we were not able to do something. If we are going to be intentional about studying the Word daily we would need to take practical steps.
How To Study The Word
- Set out time: An effective way to study your Bible is to set out time every day to do so. Do not leave it to chance or your free time, be deliberate about including it to your daily schedule. Based off my personal experience, scheduling your Bible study for the waking hours at the start of each day is easier to follow through. It also give you the extra boost you need to pull through each day. For some, it might be at noon or dusk, whatever time works for you, work with it.
- Stay Consistent: Consistency is key in growth. Medically speaking, The food you ate yesterday can not sustain you for the rest of your life, you need to keep feeding to grow and for your body to be healthy.
This logic can also be applied to spiritual growth. For the Word to perform its work in you, you have to be consistently exposed to it. Read it consistently, digest it, let it take root in your heart.
One tip to staying consistent is getting a Bible reading p,an. These plans help you stay consistent by pacing your study, there are diverse Bible plans and apps that can help you navigate these.
The Word is Vital
There is nothing else that should take the place of the Word. It’s so vital and essential for your growth. Everything you need is in it – the wisdom to do life and do it well, the guide to building a relationship with God and enjoying all the benefits, the spiritual practices that can help you sustain your growth and increase your strength.
As Christians, the Bible is our standard and should be the foundation upon which we build our life, doctrine and value system.
We really can’t go wrong with it, never.
