“Do you ever wonder the point of working so hard when we would all die one day?”
An acquaintance once asked me this question and it led to a furry of thoughts.
At the time I received this message, I was working ‘hard’ and honestly, I stopped what I was doing and took a pause there and then because it felt like a reality check moment.
It took me a moment but after a second or two, I remembered.
I remembered the end goal of every work I am doing now and will ever do here on earth – to fulfill purpose.
Truth is when all is said and done, what will matter most will not be the number of hours you spent at work or being busy, neither will it be the countless meetings you attended, nor your net worth.
It also would not matter if you were able to afford one square meal or three square meals a day, neither will it matter if you lived in one room or in an estate, it would not matter who knew your name or who didn’t.
What would matter is if you lived out the purpose for your creation.
I realize that every time God gave man an assignment it was for a purpose. For example, when Noah was tasked with building an ark, it was for the preservation of lives. So he was not toiling in vain.
Scholars have estimated that it took about 120 years to complete this task. Imagine working tirelessly and continuously on a project for that long. Good thing his work was not in vain.
The person who asked the question went on to ask why King Solomon lamented “…vanity upon vanity, all is vanity.”
King Solomon statement here is a prototype of what straying from God’s purpose will feel like – Vanity. His many wives and concubines led him to worship idols and by doing that he strayed out of God’s purpose because no matter what your purpose is in life, it is deeply rooted in Jesus Christ. No one can fulfill purpose outside Him.
Simply put, everything you accomplish outside of God’s plan for you can be summed up in one word – Vanity. The dictionary defines this as “the quality of being worthless or futile”.
With the way the world and largely capitalist society we live in is structured, it’s very easy to get lost in the waves of acquiring wealth and assets. Thus, it’s wise to take a pause often, to evaluate the work you do. How does it fit into the grand plan of God for your life?
As long as you didn’t create yourself, there is already a predetermined purpose for your existence on earth. No single human being is on earth by mistake, it doesn’t matter the circumstances that surrounded your conception or birth. As long as there is breath in your lung, then there is a purpose for you being here.
Your life’s work should be in alignment to that purpose.
How do you find your purpose?
- Connecting with your maker: If you want to find out what a product is made for, the right way to do that will be by going to the manufacturer for explanations. He alone knows what was going through his mind when he crafted out that product.
Every good manufacturer will always have a ‘contact us’ button on their manual where you can reach them per adventure you need guidance.
God, your Maker has granted you a direct contact to Him through His Son, Jesus. The Bible, our manual, describes Jesus as The Way, The Truth and The Life. There is no other access to God other than through Jesus. And throughout the Bible we see Jesus revealed to us over and over again.
So the first step to avoid living a worthless and futile life is by connecting with God through Jesus.
Selah.
